Amazon Is Getting in the Game, This Time for Podcasts

Wondery is the largest independent podcast publisher left after a wave of consolidation.

Spotify bought the narrative podcast producer Gimlet Media in 2019;  The New York Times announced its purchase of Serial Productions in July; and Spotify signed a $100 million dollar deal with Joe Rogan.  “The Joe Rogan Experience” typically draws several million listeners per episode

The Wall Street Journal reported that Wondery wants $300 million which would make it the biggest deal in the podcast industry – well, what did you expect, this is Amazon, folks.  $100 million for Joe Rogan? whoopty dooo.

Makes sense for Amazon’s plans for world domination – oops, we meant further penetration in the consumer audio space, damn autocorrect :).

Launched in 2016, Wondery hit shows include Dr. Death, Dirty John, Business Wars, The Shrink Next Door, and Gladiator.  Industry tracker Podtrac ranked Wondery as being the fourth most listened to podcast publisher in the U.S. in November – more than 9 million people tuned in to their shows.

Several venture capital firms, such as Greycroft Partners and Advancit Capital, currently have investments in Wondery.  ChaChing.
