Together is a buzzy Silicon Valley startup funded by a rock star lineup of venture capitalists that wants to help bring people together. Well, that just sounds like a line form the show Silicon Valley so let’s drill down.
The company describes its mission to “create a world where anyone can be inspired and supported to be the best version of themselves through living in a community,” according to their own press release.
Casas. The communities are built around what they describe as "Casas", the houses that exist on their platform.
We found two communities on their website, one for female hackers called The Garden and one called Edyfi, each with an Airbnb like listing in addition to a video introduction from the Casa’s organizers describing what they are looking for in potential housemates.
College-like experiences after the age of 22. On the company’s careers page, they describe the vision to recreate the feeling of community that exists during college:
- “…there is one place where community is perfect: college. We have close friends, acquaintances, and the magical serendipity of meeting someone new at the same stage of life. It isn't a surprise that we look back on our days here and miss it. As humans, we want to connect and belong with those similar to us.”
This is a for profit, right? The company is not about creating communes but rather wants to be something like Airbnb. They don’t operate or manage any properties or sign any leases. Together facilitates the creation of the communities and takes a cut of all the payments made through their platform.
$2M financing. The company just closed a recent financing with prominent VCs such as Caffeinated Capital, Eric Wu, CEO of Opendoor, Balaji Srinivasan, Homebrew, Form Capital, Bobby Lo, and several other angels.
