A company that had humble beginnings for humble creative types to ask for a tip to support their art is now a massive player in the creator economy. Patreon has created a platform with a $4B valuation in just 8 years and is on a mission to help creatives control their own destiny, instead of being beholden to capricious social media platforms to monetize their content.
Jack Conte, co-founder and CEO said:
“This is such a great time to be a creative person. Creators have incredible leverage now that they haven’t had for many years because these platforms were so focused on driving content production instead of getting creators paid.”
Patreon lets creators control the narrative by providing all of the infrastructure for creators to be able to charge subscriptions for their content as well as control and manage their audience and data.
According to a recent interview with CNBC, Patreon has over 200,000 creators on its platform with around 7M patrons paying them.
