NHost Wants to be the New Backbone of the Web

Swedish startup Nhost has created an open-source backend-as-a-service (BaaS) platform to help speed up the app development process.  Providing the backend technology such as database and server management lets developers focus on building the consumer-facing front end and user experience of the app.  The Stockholm-based startup was formed in 2019 with Johan Eliasson and Nuno Pato as the co-founders.

Building blocks of modern software
Nhost offers all the required elements of modern software, including a PostgreSQL database, real-time GraphQL API, authentication (login and registration functionality), data storage and serverless functions that allow companies to deploy custom code onto their websites.

Nhost’s pricing is set up for hobbyists, startups and enterprises similar to the way Salesforce’s Heroku BaaS is set up.

The global backend-as-a-service market was estimated to be $1.6 billion in 2020, and is projected to rise to nearly $8 billion by 2027. Firebase from Google is a major player in the market, with major companies like Alibaba, the New York Times, Duolingo, Venmo, and Trivago using such BaaS services.  It’s important to note that it’s not just cash-strapped startups that want to outsource backend management of their apps.
