We wrote earlier this week (link to the story below) about Elon Musk’s company Neuralinks and the MindPong video which highlighted a monkey playing a video game with its mind. It was using Neuralinks’ wireless Bluetooth brain interface in monkeys. It has been widely reported that this was an incredible breakthrough, especially since this was a first for a wireless BCI (brain-computer interface).
After a bit more research, it turns out that even the wireless aspect of Neuralinks' interface which has been widely reported as a breakthrough is actually not one – because Brown University researchers beat Neuralinks to the punch.
The study was reported in IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering. It actually builds on a prototype wireless transmitter designed by Brown University engineers in 2014.
The current model is designed to work with the BrainGate wired BCI which relies on two 96-electrode arrays implanted beneath the patient’s skull.
