Gen Z is Calling the Shots at the New Workplace

Once upon a time, the older generation ruled the younger generation of workers with practically an iron fist.  All that has changed since the millennials arrived on the scene, and it has become even more pronounced with Gen Zs popping up in the new workplace, per a recent article in the NYT.

The basic theme.  This new pattern of behavior from Gen Z in the workplace is playing out across industries and sectors.  It’s not just limited to the tech industry as you might think in a knee jerk response to this article’s headline.  And the behavior goes something like this:  Gen Zers basically demand an open expression of values rather than a focus on corporate neutrality.

Some examples.

  • NYC-based retail business: managers confused when young employees wanted paid time off when coping with anxiety or period cramps.

  • Supplement company: a Gen Z worker ‘questioned why she would be expected to clock in for a standard eight-hour day when she might get through her to-do list by the afternoon.’

  • Biotech venture: entry-level staff gave the founder a to-do-list of tasks.

It’s more than just the concrete examples like the above but also a cultural and mindset shift on what is acceptable and what is in taste.

CEO of Ziva Meditation Emily Fletcher commented that Gen Zers “celebrate human emotion, instead of having an outdated framework of what corporate should be.”

And like generations before, Gen Zers’ weird is slowly becoming the new normal.
