REMOTE WORK

Remote Work Has Created a Market for a Home Office Away from Home

Anyplace started its life as a marketplace for people to be able to book longer term stays at hotels and other properties, but now is expanding to an operator role to serve remote workers specifically.

New product.  Anyplace Select is designed for remote workers and corporate travelers to be able to work from anywhere with furnished apartments that include a “fully equipped” home office.

The setup.  That includes a height-adjustable standing desk, ergonomic chair, 34-inch ultra-wide monitor, professional microphone, webcam, collapsible green screen, laptop stand, docking station and key light.

Is Airbnb a competitor?  CEO Satoru Steve Naito doesn’t think so –

“So, Airbnb is not our competitor, but a partner and actually one of our biggest acquisition channels.  I don’t believe Airbnb will move into the operator space, with their own inventory. Their strength is in the platform business.”

Initial traction.  Anyplace launched Select last year in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles and San Diego, and achieved a $1 million run rate within seven months of its launch and a 90% occupancy rate per Naito.

$5.3M Series A.  Anyplace raised $5.3 million led by GA Technologies, with participation from Jason Calacanis, Launch Fund, Japanese soccer star and Dreamers Ventures co-founder Keisuke Honda, Mercari co-founder Hiroshi Tomishima and East Ventures.

Expansion plans.  The startup is looking to expand to major cities in the U.S., particularly including Hawaii, Miami, Austin and Denver.
